For many students at The University of Georgia, family weekend is one of the highlights of the semester. It is exciting to show your family the college life you have created in Athens and let them experience everything the city has to offer.

To help you plan the perfect agenda for your family’s next visit, we have compiled a list of the top 10 things to do with your family in Athens.  Between the iconic restaurants, scenery and events that Athens has to offer, the list of things to do is extensive, and there is something for everyone!

1. Explore the Athens Outdoors

Explore the Athens outdoors with your family.

State Botanical Garden of Georgia

Located off of South Milledge, the State Botanical Garden of Georgia is one of Athens’ most popular attractions. It is home to numerous themed gardens, nature trails, and overall beautiful sights and scenery that is sure to be enjoyed by everyone in your family.

To make it even better, admission is free.

Sandy Creek Park

Sandy Creek Park has over 16 miles of trails, making it home to the largest collection of trails in Athens. If your family loves the outdoors, this is a great all-day park to enjoy some family bonding as you hike through woods, beside rivers and over bridges. There are three trails to choose from, all with different skill levels. At the time of publication, admission is $2 per person.

2. Cheer for the Georgia Bulldogs

Depending on the time of year, there are various athletic events to attend to show your family what the sports atmosphere is like at UGA!

Football Saturdays

If your family is visiting Athens during football season, head downtown to a favorite game-watching location such as Paloma Park, Boars Head, or Bar South to enjoy watching the defending National Champions. If you can snag tickets to Sanford Stadium, be sure to get there early and ready to lose your voice!

Spring Sports

If your family is visiting during spring semester, there are still many athletic events to attend. Baseball, softball and tennis are all in full swing within the first few months of the spring semester. 5. Take a Food Tour

The Classic City is known for its restaurant establishments, both casual and fine dining. Here are some places to add to your list for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Cali N Tito’s – $

With two locations in Athens, Cali N Tito’s is a favorite for delicious and fast-paced Mexican cuisine. One location is on Lumpkin Street and the second is on Cedar Shoals Drive.

The Athens Farmers Market is a beloved year-round event held every Saturday from 8 a.m. until 12 p.m. You’ll find a wide selection of locally grown fruits and vegetables, handmade art, fresh flowers and more.

It is a perfect way to spend a Saturday morning with your family, and it will leave you the rest of the afternoon to explore more of Athens finest offerings.

8. Explore the Art Scene

The Georgia Museum of Art

Located on UGA campus, The Georgia Museum of Art is a perfect place to visit while showing your family around South Campus. Admission is free, and upon entry you will be greeted with historical artifacts and compelling exhibits.

Lyndon House Art Center

The Lyndon House is a beautiful, historic building located on Hoyt Street. Inside, you will find

visual arts complex that incorporates gallery spaces, art class studios, meeting rooms, a research library and more. Plus, admission is free!
